"Our Whole History" Initiative

Lavada Nahon, Interpreter of African American History for the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation

In 2021, Governor Cuomo charged the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation/Bureau of Historic Sites with crafting the ‘Our Whole History’ initiative to create and share a more balanced history of our state where all are present. In this presentation Lavada Nahon, Interpreter of African American History at NYSOPRHP/BHS will explore what it means to reinterpret history on a statewide scale to be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive as well as the triumphs, trials, lessons, and next steps on a path to create a more complete and accurate narrative for New York’s 34 historic sites, and 126 parks.
