    Located at the World Trade Center in New York City, the 9/11 Memorial Museum tells the story of 9/11 through media, narratives, and a collection of monumental and authentic artifacts, presenting visitors with personal stories of loss, recovery, and hope.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Conservation Technician (CT) serves as a ‘hands-on’ collections-care provider in the public spaces and storage areas of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The CT’s responsibilities will primarily support preventive conservation efforts at the Museum, working with physical and digital objects in the Museum’s collection, overseeing their safe handling, storage, preparation for exhibition, and maintenance of material on display in the Museum’s exhibition spaces. The CT will also document environmental data and participate in integrated pest management activities.

    The CT reports to the Museum’s Preventive Conservator and receives assignments from the other conservators in the department, as needed. This is a full-time 40 hour/week position. Work will be during business hours but, with advanced scheduling, may be adjusted to accommodate occasional off-hours housekeeping and special projects which may include evening and weekend hours. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Play an integral role in preventive conservation activities including maintaining open mount artifacts in the Museum’s exhibition spaces, monitoring environmental conditions and light levels, as well as assisting with integrated pest management activities throughout the Museum and offsite storage locations.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of conservation procedures, protocols, and workflows within the museum pertaining to digital preservation; collaborate with technical staff and outside vendors when necessary.
    • Assist with written and photographic conservation documentation.
    • Keep apprised of advances in technical imaging and contribute to establishing department’s image-related protocols and goals.
    • Assist in conservation lab management, such as ordering and maintaining supplies, chemical inventory, and budget tracking.
    • Contribute to the maintenance of collection storage areas for safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
    • Serve as member of the interdepartmental installation team for Museum exhibitions, preparing objects for installation, and assisting in exhibition rotations.
    • Liaise with other departments as required including: Exhibitions, IT, Buildings and Grounds, and Rights and Reproductions. 

    QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
    • College degree required, interest in pursuing a conservation career a plus.
    • Two or more years of experience working at a museum, gallery, fine arts services company or comparable professional experience.
    • Demonstrable technology skills, including experience with databases, scanning, management of metadata, and sharing and archiving of digital image assets.
    • Ability to effectively manage competing projects and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to use hand and power tools.
    • Comfort working at heights on aerial lifts, ladders, and scaffolding (relevant training will be provided).
    • Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively, communicating effectively with a partner/co-worker, or with a larger team, to complete tasks at hand in a timely, professional manner. 
    • Positive attitude with the ability to be flexible while maintaining a professional demeanor.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
    The physical demands and work environment described in this job description is representative of those that the employee will encounter and are expected to meet to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.     While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk, listen, use hands to type data, touch, feel, reach with hands and arms, and dial the telephone. The employee is also required to stand, occasionally for long periods, walk, climb ladders, and be able to work on elevated work platforms. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 30lbs.

    Work primarily will be conducted at the Museum premises in lower Manhattan. Scheduled activities sometimes will involve subsidized travel to and work at the Museum’s offsite storage facilities in Jersey City, N.J., and in Rotterdam, NY, in ancillary visitor centers in Lower Manhattan, and elsewhere as needed. All of these locations are climate-controlled.  The noise level is usually low.
