Session: Exploring Successes and Challenges in Community Engagement at University Art MuseumsTuesday, April 89:15 - 10:30 AM Location: Ithaca Downtown Conference Center About: Explore the ways university museums and programs develop and cultivate new community connections—both on campus and in the general public. As cultural institutions rooted in higher education, university museums and programs are in a unique position to serve campus and public communities. However, they often struggle with the perception of being exclusive academic spaces rather than welcoming community centers. Presenters: Evan Wright, Community and Academic Engagement Manager, Castellani Art Museum Evan Wright is the Community and Academic Engagement Manager at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University, where he uses art as a catalyst for learning to inspire dialogue, creativity, and education through programming and community engagement. He earned an M.A. in Museum Studies from Buffalo State College and a dual B.S. in Anthropology and Art History from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.Edward Millar, Curator of Folk Arts, Castellani Art Museum Millar joined the Castellani Art Museum as Curator of Folk Arts in 2015 with a background in ethnographic fieldwork. In his role, Millar develops exhibitions highlighting local cultural heritage and community based artists in the Buffalo-Niagara region, with a focus on folk and traditional art, foodways, and occupational folklife. His work has featured at the local, state, and national levels: including a fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress (2020).Nicholas West, Co-director, University Museums; Curator, Picker Art Galley, Colgate University Dr. Nicholas West has been curator at Picker Art Gallery since 2017 and co-director of University Museums since 2020. He has originated several collections-based exhibitions, fostered new collaborations with faculty and staff and given numerous talks and guest lectures on topics in museology. West previously held curatorial positions at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the City of Lancaster Museum of Art and History, and the University of Southern California’s (USC) Fisher Museum of Art. Allison Schultes Goodwin, Director, Academic & Community Programs, Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester Allison Goodwin joined the Memorial Art Gallery in 2022, bringing a decade of cross-disciplinary training to her role. Her team develops programs and engagement strategies that produce high quality teaching, learning and art-making experiences across MAG’s suite of programming for PreK-16 audiences, educators, community members and Creative Workshop students. She is a passionate museum educator at heart and enjoys creating programs that serve and are accessible to diverse audiences and celebrate the greater Rochester community. |
Conference Cancellation Policy
If for any reason, MANY cancels the conference, we will issue you a full refund.
If you cancel your registration before Monday March 31, that request must be made in writing via email to conference@nysmuseums.org. We will refund you the full amount of your registration, minus a $45 administrative fee.
Refunds requested after March 31 will not be granted, including requests made based on absence due to illness, late arrival and/or weather conditions. No refunds will be issued on special event tickets at any point due to restaurants and caterers requiring payment in advance.
Special event ticket purchases are non-refundable; restaurants and caterers require payment in advance. you are welcome to give or sell them to a colleague attending the conference. Please notify MANY staff in advance of the conference regarding any transfer of special event tickets.Please see your hotel confirmation email for your individual hotel reservation cancellation policy.
Video/Photography Policy
By registering for and attending our Annual Conference "Cultivating Community: Looking In, Reaching Out" you grant the Museum Association of New York (MANY) and its authorized representatives permission to film, photograph, or otherwise record your participation in the conference and associated special events.
You further agree that such images, photographs, and recordings may be used by MANY without your prior approval in any form and for any lawful purpose including, without limitation, promoting MANY. Such use will not entitle you to any credit or compensation.
You release MANY, its officers, and employees from any liability connected with the use of any image, photograph, or recording taken during MANY's Annual Conference and associated special events.
Conference Code of Conduct
