    Job Description: Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Curator, this position performs responsibilities related to the documentation, care, and preservation of the museum collection and is responsible for working with staff to install and maintain collection items on exhibit. This position is primarily responsible for the intellectual control of the permanent collection. The Registrar may participate on museum development teams for all visitor experiences as assigned.

    START DATE: September 2024

    DUTIES INCLUDE:

    A.  Responsible for maintaining intellectual control of the permanent collection.

    A1. Work with Chief Curator and other department staff to develop and/or refine cataloguing protocols.

    A2. Administer database system, including security codes. Work with off-site software providers to correct errors and improve functionality as needed.

    A3. Maintain in-house and on-line collection database; screen all entries for consistent language, accuracy.

    A4. In consultation with Conservator and Collections Manager, assign and record home locations for art and artifacts.

    A5. Work with staff to install, maintain, and move artifacts for exhibits and programming.

    A6. Provide and facilitate public and staff access to the collections with the goal of enhancing

    the collection as an educational resource for all museum audiences. Conduct CSSC tours.

    A7. Train and supervise interns and volunteers working on collection projects.

    B. Accurately prepare and process museum records related to the collections, in consultation with the Conservator and Collections Manager.

    B1. Administer the accession files and ensure accurate and complete records.

    B2. Generate and maintain all legal documents including deeds of gift, loan agreements, and deaccession paperwork. Prepare quarterly and annual reports as needed.

    B3. Administer outgoing and incoming loans. Arrange for shipping. Work with Director of Finance and Operations to accurately record insurance values. Collect and maintain facility report forms, certificates of insurance, etc.

    B4. Recommend and initiate paperwork, complete forms for de-accessions. Report as needed to NYS Department of Education.

    B5. Responsible for administering rights and reproductions: fees, paperwork, delivery, filing, etc.

    B6. Process objects and photographs into the collection.

    C. Assist museum staff in preparing grant narratives, exhibitions, programs and publications that will enhance collections interpretation and preservation as well as the mission of the museum.

    C1. Assist with implementing approved plans, grants, and programs for increased access, improved storage and conservation of the collections.

    C2. Supply pertinent budget and other information for grant applications relating to collection management projects, collections care, documentation, and exhibition.

    C3. Serve as a contributing member to exhibit and program project teams as assigned.

    D.  Work with museum staff to assure the professional and efficient operations of the museum.

    D1. Serve on museum committees as assigned.

    D2. Represent the museum at professional and regional organizations.

    D3. Adhere to the professional standards, practices, and ethics as recognized by the American Association of Museums and the American Institute of Conservation and the application of those professional standards, practices and ethics at the Adirondack Experience.

    D4. Stay abreast of all current practices in the museum profession at large.

    D5. Participate in other museum activities as assigned.


    POSITION REQUIREMENTS


    Thorough knowledge of American history and museum practices. Masters degree in museum studies preferred.

    Two to three years’ experience in museum work.

    Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to articulate the mission of the institution.

    Strong administrative and organizational skills.  Attention to detail critical.

    Ability to manage time efficiently, work on multiple and deadlines, and the ability to work under pressure.

    Ability to work independently and within a team.

    Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

    Salary range: $38,000-$44,000
