Designed to allow visitors the pleasure of discovery and exploration, the Museum includes thirty-nine distinct structures on forty-five acres, each filled with beautiful, fascinating, and whimsical objects.

    Job Description:

    The Museum Registrar is a member of the Collections department, a dynamic team who stewards Shelburne Museum’s world-renowned permanent collections of art and Americana, manages an active calendar of temporary exhibitions and gallery rotations, and collaborates with peer institutions around the world on incoming and outgoing loans. The department includes the Director of Collections and Conservation (a conservator), Associate Registrar, Collections Manager, Archivist/Associate Registrar/Digital Assets Manager, Preparator, and two art handlers as well as volunteers, grant-funded term positions, and interns. The Museum’s collections are housed in thirty-nine buildings spread out over forty-five beautifully landscaped acres. Among these are twenty-five significant examples of historic New England architecture, relocated to the Museum grounds to provide a historic setting for the Museum’s treasures and the LEED-certified Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education which includes 5,000 sq. ft. of gallery space.


    Essential Job Functions:

    • Manage and collaborate with the Associate Registrar to coordinate logistics surrounding the loan program including correspondence, loan and installation agreements and shipping, insurance, courier arrangements, invoices, and condition reports

    • Oversee work undertaken within the department on collections inventories, research, and cataloging

    • Collaborate with the Director of Collections & Conservation to develop and manage the departmental budget; contribute to development of the exhibitions budget

    • Collaborate with the Director of Collections & Conservation and the Curatorial team on the acquisitions program

    • Organize, inform, and collaborate with the Curatorial team on deaccessioning program

    • Manage storage, object tracking, and inventory in collaboration with the Collections Manager and the Associate Registrar

    • Oversee cataloguing and inventory of permanent collection objects

    • Responsible for the Collections Management Database

    • Oversees the collections photography and collaborates with the Archivist/Associate Registrar/Digital Assets Manager on image management, including rights and reproductions

    • Manages the Fine Arts Insurance program, participates in Museum-wide discussions of risk management and emergency preparedness and participates in departmental Collections Risk Management and Disaster Recovery trainings

    • Other duties as assigned


    Supervisory Responsibility:

    Associate Registrar, Collections Manager, grant funded temporary positions, and volunteers.


    Education and Experience:

    • M.A. in Museum Studies or arts-related field preferred

    • 7 plus years registration experience in a museum

    • Supervisory experience


    Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, and time management skills

    • Demonstrated attention to detail and written and oral communication skills

    • Professional data entry skills using a Collections Management System; Mimsy xg and Crystal Reports experience a plus

    • Experience in data migration

    • Art handling skills and collection care experience required

    • Experience with budgeting, art packing and shipping objects, museum loan processes, and insurance requirements

    • Must be committed to best practices in collections stewardship, including respectful stewardship of collections items made by Indigenous community members.

    • Must have a current driver’s license and clean driving record

    • Legal authorization to work in the United States

    • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work and overnight travel, including occasional courier trips


    Terms:

    The Museum Registrar is a full-time, full-benefits, salaried, exempt, employment-at-will position.

    Shelburne Museum offers a generous benefits package including:

    • Combined time off up to 160 hours per year, 8 hours for your birthday, and 8 hours for community service leave.

    • Employees may contribute to the Museum’s Retirement plan, effective 1st of the month following their start date. After one year of service employees are eligible for a 2% Match and 3% Safe Harbor contribution, paid for by the Museum.

    • Other benefits include free Museum access for immediate family members and an employee discount at the Museum store and café.

    This is an onsite position located in Shelburne, Vermont. Final approval for hiring will be dependent upon a successful background check.

    Salary range: $60,000-$75,000
