Voicing Our Own Value: The New Museum Labor Movement

In recent years, museums across the country have seen a new wave of unionization efforts as museum staff have begun to recognize the importance of organizing, these efforts often involve contradictions between new expectations and the “way things have always been done” at our institutions. Can unions provide new energy for cultural organizations rather than pose a threat? Can living wages and protections against toxic workplaces coexist within a vibrant and sustainable museum economic model?

Aaron Noble has been in the museum field since 2005. He currently serves as a PEF Steward for Division 194 within the Office of Cultural Education and is the division’s communications coordinator.

Maida Rosenstein is Director of Organizing for UAW Local 2110 and as such, has overseen the organizing and served as chief negotiator for most of the museum organizing in Local 2110, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney, the Guggenheim, the Jewish Museum, the New Museum and the Hispanic Society in New York.

SEIU local 200 United

Sean Collins is a union organizer for SEIU 200 United in the Capital Region. He will speak to general and grassroots organization and strategy.

Deborah Schwartz is an independent museum consultant nationally for her leadership skills and her ability to transform organizations. She has experience working at all levels of museums and can speak to the topic from a variety of perspectives.
