
The Help Shape the Future of Museums: New York Study of Public and Private Museums Survey Now Open
Albany, NY—June 17, 2025 — All chartered museums across New York are invited to participate in the New York Study of Public and Private Museums, a survey conducted on behalf of Empire State Development, the New York State Council on the Arts, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the New York State Department of State, and the New York State Education Department.
This first-of-its-kind statewide census collects vital data from every chartered museum in New York — including historical societies, zoos, botanical gardens, nature centers, and aquariums. Information gathered will inform policy and strengthen the sector.
This study aims to understand the current state of museums and create a comprehensive picture of the statewide museum landscape, The collected data will help inform decision-making regarding funding and support, ensure museums remain open and accessible, and demonstrate the impact they have on their communities.
The survey is open now through July 31 and collects 2024 data related to governance, finances, visitation, staffing, and more. Tools to complete the survey are available, including a user guide, data worksheets and workbooks, instructional videos, live webinars and personalized assistance.
