    General Job Description:

    The Executive Director of the Montauk Historical Society (MHS) is the chief executive officer of the Society, responsible for fiscal leadership, general management and operation of our museums, including programs, partnerships, budget, fundraising, public relations, recruiting and marketing.

    The ED answers to the Board of Directors and works closely with all constituents to develop, articulate and implement the strategic direction of the MHS to accomplish its mission.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Minimum of five years leadership experience in a museum or similar nonprofit organization with knowledge of best management practices for museum operations, staffing and physical plant oversight. Experience in handling human resources.

    Proven ability to organize and manage a budget to effectively assure the financial health of the Museums and Society.

    A track record as successful fundraiser, including capital campaigns, individual & corporate donor cultivation, grant writing, & familiarity with key funding sources for museums. 

    Increasing public awareness of the mission and programming offered by MHS to attract visitors, donors and volunteers to our Museums.

    Developing a vision that balances the future of MHS while maintaining and preserving the mission and traditional qualities of the Society.

    Qualifications:

    Degree in Museum Studies, Arts/Nonprofit Management/Administration, or similar field. B.A. required. M.A. preferred.

    As the public “face” of the MHS, demonstrate superior communication skills in promoting it and expanding its base of support.

    Strong knowledge of local and regional history and appreciation of cultural artifacts presented by the MHS museums.
