Historic Site Interpreter Position

    Immediate Contract Position at Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, from June 27 - September 2 (Labor Day)

    Schedule: Part-time, 16 - 32 hours per week, Wednesday - Sunday (includes all holidays)

    Hourly wage: $13.00 

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Friends of Schuyler Mansion seek 1 to 2 Historic Site Interpreters to work up to 32 hours during our peak season, end June – Labor Day. Interpreter’s primary duty is to provide guided tours of Schuyler Mansion to groups of all ages, including both general and themed Special Focus tours (on Hamilton and the Women of Schuyler Mansion). Interpreters will also man the Visitor Center front desk, and assist with special events, research requests, imparting of general information, basic office duties, and other work tasks as assigned. Interpreters will be paid during training and are expected to become familiar with and enforce the site’s rules within the mansion and general safety procedures. Interpreters will follow guidelines for interpretation at Schuyler Mansion.


    •  High School completion required; however Bachelor’s Degree or completed coursework in History, Museum Studies, and/or Art History preferred.
    •  Excellent verbal and public presentation skills.
    • Demonstrated interest in local and regional history.
    • Must be able to interact with public in a professional and courteous manner at all times and provide exceptional customer service.
    • Must have the ability to climb stairs and stand for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to learn cash register and credit card machine operations. 
    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and work as a team player required.
    • English fluency required; fluency in other languages is a plus.
    • Valid driver’s license required.

    Schuyler Mansion, located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany’s historic South End, was the eighteenth-century home of Revolutionary War general Philip Schuyler (1733-1804) and his family.  From mid-May to end October, Schuyler Mansion is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 5:00.  Guided tours are offered on the hour, with the last tour at 4:00 p.m. For further information about programs and events, please call the site at (518) 434-0834.
