    About the Institution: Situated in historic Cazenovia, Lorenzo State Historic Site is the 1807 Federal-style home of John Lincklaen, Holland Land Company agent and founder of Cazenovia.  Lorenzo was continually occupied by the Lincklaen/Ledyard family until the property and contents were conveyed to New York State in 1968. The imprint of all of Lorenzo's residents, including the enslaved people, servants, and many employees required to run the estate, can be found at every turn. This historic site is part of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. 

    Job Description:

    Overview of Duties and Responsibilities: 
    The incumbent will serve as first-in-command at Lorenzo Historic Site and satellite Helen McNitt State Park. 

    • Administers rules, regulations, and policies for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and the State of NY.
    • Represents the Agency in featured interviews (print, radio, video), and at community programs and events.
    • Directs and plans historic site operations and programming.
    • Approves staffing and schedules for the operations, interpretation, recreation, and educational program functions.
    • Monitors and helps coordinate archaeology, collections care, and restoration programs.
    • Collaborates with the Division of Historic Preservation on developing plans for interpretation, building preservation/restoration, and collection care. 
    • Manages facility operations and maintenance; approves staffing schedules, schedules maintenance projects, and responds to customer concerns and issues. 
    • Interviews prospective employees, supervises and manages direct report staff, conducts periodic permanent and seasonal staff performance review, develops and manages facility budget and spending plans.
    • Submits reports regularly to Regional Office on spending for seasonal staffing, maintenance supplies and materials, and special projects.
    • Collaborates with the Friends of Lorenzo and other partner organizations.
    • Serves as the park contact for the Friends of Lorenzo and serves as the editor and publisher of the Friends of Lorenzo biannual newsletter.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*

    To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:

    Must have a bachelor’s degree; AND general experience in museum or historic site operations involving education, research, exhibition, and/or collection management including accessioning, cataloging, inventory, and object care/handling; AND administrative experience (budgeting, planning, directing, and/or supervision) at a historic house, historic site, historic park, historic section of a museum, or with a governmental agency or program having responsibility for historic houses, museums, historic sites, or historic parks, as follows:

    Four years of general experience including three years of administrative experience.

    Examples of non qualifying general experience are but are not limited to: operation of equipment such as mowers, snow blowers, chainsaws etc.; grounds maintenance; and housekeeping.

    Examples of non qualifying administrative experience are but are not limited to: administrative support including: word processing, filing, collecting entrance fees, managing a gift shop, and working as a receptionist.

    Substitution: A master's degree in historic preservation, museum studies, education, history, American studies, anthropology, or architectural history may be substituted for one year of general experience.

    *For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non- competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

    At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

    Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
