    About the Institution

    Be part of a historic community that takes its local history seriously!!  The Tioga County Historical Society (TCHS) seeks an Executive Director to lead our local museum. Tioga County and the Village of Owego offer a vibrant community including village, town and county historians, published authors, the Historic Owego Marketplace, as well as variety of historic locations including the nationally-landmarked Evergreen Cemetery, Parkview Hotel and Dugan House Restaurant, the Belva Lockwood Inn and a local preservation society helping to preserve our local built heritage.  Since its creation in 1914, the Tioga County Historical Society (TCHS) has been committed to preserving the history of Tioga County, collecting and preserving artifacts from every town in the county, and educating the public regarding Tioga County history and how it relates to our national history as a whole.  

    Job Description

    The Executive Director (ED) will work effectively with the Board of Trustees to provide leadership and administration for all functions of the TCHS in support of our vision to “explore the past, engage the present, and learn to create a better future.”  Supervise TCHS staff, volunteers and committees, collaborate with stakeholders, manage exhibits of artifacts from various collections and the library’s genealogy and research facilities, and communicate our mission and educational programs regarding the history of Tioga County. Primary goals for the ED are to create and build collaborative relationships, engage community stakeholders, promote TCHS’s mission and goals, explore fundraising opportunities in order to expand programming and increase membership, and effectively manage support staff and volunteers in these activities.

    A bachelor’s degree in History, Education, Public Administration, Marketing or relevant discipline is preferred.  Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.  Several years of experience managing a museum, historical society, library or other non-profit 501c-3 community organization, as well as experience managing staff and delegating tasks is preferred. We seek candidates who possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to create effective relationships; who have creative problem solving skills within an environment of limited resources; and the ability to be flexible and make decisions to address changing goals and priorities; Must effectively communicate and deliver community programming. Candidates should possess enthusiasm and interest in historical topics in order to generate excitement, interest and participation of our community partners. Experience creating and making public presentations, with computer applications used for standard office as well as collections management, genealogy, public relations/social media, and web presence preferred.
