    Archivist/Librarian

    The Albany Institute of History & Art, a museum and research library with a mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the art, history, and culture of the Upper Hudson Valley of New York, is seeking a permanent, full-time archivist/librarian who is passionate about history and enjoys working with researchers, volunteers, and staff as much as organizing and processing collections.

    The Institute’s library contains significant holdings of manuscript collections, photographs, books, maps, and other collections that relate to and document the Upper Hudson Valley. These collections are available to researchers, students, and the general public by pre-scheduled appointments and are also used and referenced by Albany Institute staff for exhibitions, collections research, and educational programming.

    The archivist/librarian will be responsible for:

    • accessioning, processing, and housing collections.
    • assisting on-site researchers and answering queries from remote researchers. This includes scheduling researcher appointments, locating and pulling collections from storage, and guiding and suggesting other relevant collections. This requires the archivist/librarian to know the content of collections and understand their historical significance.
    • digitizing collections for digital database.
    • other duties include overseeing a dedicated core of volunteers, assisting curatorial staff with exhibition research, assisting with the writing of grants, meeting with collection donors, preparing news articles for the Institute’s bulletin and website, and other activities.

    The archivist/librarian is an integral team member of the collections and exhibitions department and will report directly to the chief curator. The candidate must have good communication and writing skills, must be able to multitask, and must be organized and highly motivated.

    The candidate must have a Master’s degree in Library Science or Archival Studies. A Bachelor’s degree or second Master’s degree in history preferred. The candidate must have at least five years of professional experience employed full time at a research library where duties have included processing collections, reference responsibilities, assisting patrons, digitizing collections, and collaborating with staff. The candidate will have a thorough knowledge of best practices for archives and libraries.

    Full-time permanent salaried position with a generous benefits package. Salary range: $48,000-$50,000.
