Manager of Visitor Engagement - Genesee Country Village & Museum

    Position Title: Manager of Visitor Engagement
    Position Type: Hourly, Full-Time (2,080 hours/year)
    Department: Interpretation
    Reports to: Senior Director of Interpretation
    Coordinates with: Office Manager and Interpretation Management Team as well as the Director of Tourism & Event Sales

    Primary Functions
    The primary functions of this position are to develop new experiential programs, tours, and activities within the Historic Village; coordinate delivery of these programs with other Interpretation and Visitor Services department staff; and work with the Interpretation management team to create materials suitable for the Museum daily/weekly and theme week day sheets and program guides. This individual will work closely with the Director of Tourism & Event Sales to plan and coordinate details of programs and tours for group and non-local visitors. This individual will also serve as guide for visiting travel writers, tourism leaders, and similar groups as needed and will also represent the Museum at various events in the community.

    Note: The allocation of time will vary depending on the time of year. During the off season, there will be more program development and less of other areas, and during the regular season, implementation, supervision, and other duties will be the primarily responsibilities.

    Job Duties
    Program Development (30 percent)

    • Will research, create, and guide the implementation of new interpretive programs and activities (theme weeks, tours, gatherings, etc.) in the Historic Village. 
    • Coordinate existing programs within the Interpretation department in coordination with the Interpretation management team in support of the Museum’s mission. 
    • Will schedule three programs each day for three to five days each week during the open season (depending upon the special event schedule).
    • Partner with the Senior Director and Interpretation department staff in creating new experiential opportunities that will enhance our current offerings and provide unforgettable experiences for our visitors.
    • Develop content for the "After-Hours Tour" program and supervise the guides. Manage the annual budget for the program under the supervision of the Senior Director.
    • Develop a variety of "Enrichment Offerings" that are designed to familiarize Museum staff and volunteers with multiple features, attractions, and programs available throughout the site.

    Program Implementation (50 percent)

    • Serve as liaison between Tourism Sales and Interpretation and work closely with the Director of Tourism & Event Sales to plan and coordinate details of programs and tours for group and non-local visitors. Duties will include scheduling, training staff and overseeing guides, as well as coordination with Interpretation and other outside parties. Present special programs for tour groups and other special visitors as needed.
    • Oversee training, distribution of resource materials, and guidance to interpretive staff and volunteers to implement new experiences and tours. Develop a corps of individuals who will be assigned to deliver experiential programs to the public.
    • Ensure that appropriate Interpretation staff are informed of necessary information and guidelines related to their new activities and that the quality of their work meets required standards.
    • Deliver guided tours or gatherings in the Historic Village and staff one building on at least one day each week.
    • Coordinate weekday and non-event weekend information for the Museum’s Day Sheets and provide that information to be posted to the Museum’s website in cooperation with Visitor Services and other appropriate departments. Ensure that Day Sheets are accurate and visitor-friendly in their content and layout.
    Supervision (10 percent)
    • Ensure that interpreters involved in the tours and programs are working safely, efficiently, and correctly in their assigned duties and wear appropriate attire for their roles.
    • Solicit, obtain, and process requests from appropriate staff for supplies, assistance, and information related to programs developed under your supervision.
    • Work with the Office Manager to schedule appropriate staff and/or volunteers in their proper stations for special program needs.
    • Ensure that interpreters under their supervision provide care to buildings, grounds, and objects under their responsibility as well as maintain the integrity of all historical spaces during program implementation.
    Other Duties (10 percent)
    • Serve as host or co-host and guide for visiting travel writers, FAM tours, and similar groups as needed, and represent the Museum at various events in the community.
    • Staffing programs and special events throughout the year as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Interpretation.

    Experience and Skills

    Qualifications

    • Undergraduate degree and two to three years of museum or education experience or equivalent life and work experience.
    • At least one year of supervisory experience and demonstrated success in development of successful education or museum programs and the ability to delegate, assign, and ensure work is completed as requested.
    • Excellent communication and interpretive/education skills and ease giving presentations, training programs, and working in front of diverse groups including adults, families, and school groups.
    • Ability and willingness to learn new historical information and then translate information into useful training material.
    • Computer skills in order to conduct research, compile data, communicate and conduct training activities. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word) desired.
    • Willingness to learn new skills, teach them, and perform routine tasks with enthusiasm.
    • Ability and willingness to be assigned positions that require some physical exertion, the ability to work outdoors in uncomfortable weather or conditions and to wear historical apparel in a historically appropriate manner.
    • Ability and willingness to identify, maintain, and promote standards of excellence in all aspects of job performance to staff assigned to them.
    • Ability to communicate, work with and interact with co-workers in a friendly, professional, and place and time appropriate manner.
    • Willingness to improving the visitor experience at the Museum through properly managing interpretive staff and their activities.
    • Ability and willingness to work a schedule that will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Dental Insurance: We also provide 50% employer paid premium for single dental policy.
    Life Insurance: We provide a 100% employer paid premium group life insurance policy of $50,000.
    Voluntary Disability Insurance: We offer a supplemental disability policy that pays 60% of your wages while you are not working due sickness or off-the-job injury. The Museum contributes 1% of the premium payment.
    Retirement: Employee contribution into retirement is immediate; eligible for Museum contribution, after two years of employment working over 1,000 hours each year. Museum contribution is determined each year and has been 4% in past years. If your immediate previous employment was with a 501c3 organization and you participated in the plan, your years count toward the service requirement for the employer contribution.
    Membership: Family membership to the Genesee Country Village & Museum
    Vacation: Three weeks of paid vacation (prorated).
    Sick Time: 1 hour of sick time accrued for every 30 hours worked.
    Holidays: up to ten paid holidays for a calendar year
