    Job description – Project Archivist


    Schenectady County Historical Society seeks an experienced, collaborative professional to serve as a Project Archivist during the planning stage of a project to document historical records created by members of the African American community in Schenectady County, NY. The project archivist will report to the SCHS Librarian/Archivist and work with the Librarian/Archivist and members of the project’s advisory committee. The project archivist will create and test a survey tool which will be distributed to record creators and holders of historical collections to document records with historical value created by individuals and organizations within the African American community of Schenectady County. This is a six-week grant funded contract position. The work will be primarily remote with minimal in-person. 

    Required qualifications:

    • Experience creating survey tools for historical materials and collections

    • Strong understanding of the records created by individuals and organizations within the African American community

    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

    • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively both as a team member and independently

    • High level of attention to detail

    Preferred qualifications:

    • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science or Archival Studies OR equivalent education and experience (relevant subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience)

    • Knowledge of Schenectady County history and culture


    $6000, paid in two installments (second installment paid at delivery of survey tool, test results, and process recommendations)
