    Director of Visitor Experience

    The Director of Visitor Experience provides a management role which oversees sites, admissions, branding, and programming to obtain a superior experience for visitors. Position is at an active historical society with several historical sites and room for growth. Reports to the Executive Director and works to carry out the East Hampton Historical Society (EHHS) mission and vision through all experiential, mission-based offerings and guest services. The successful candidate will be a creative, visionary leader with hands-on, participative management experience skilled at leading cross-functional teams. Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye towards future needs and institutional resources. Ensure volunteer support crosses all organization’s functions

    The Director of Visitor Experience will ensure the organization has operating excellence, integrity, and creativity in the following areas:

     Events/Public Programs/Education

     Visitor experience

     Site management

    Management (60%): Works collaboratively with the staff of East Hampton Historical Society. Position serves as the main point of contact for the public. Duties project-based work and oversite of facilities, admission, marketing, and public/educational programs. Project a professional company image through in-person and phone interaction. 

    Program/Community Engagement (40%): Oversees the programming, marketing, and outreach objectives for EHHS by engaging in community. This includes working with other staff members to accomplish public engagement and supporting Chief Curator in a variety of functions.

    Essential Functions:

    • Oversees 5 historic sites calendar, needs, and security with maintenance staff and vendors.
    • Acts as a project manager for special projects which includes rentals, events, and fundraisers. 
    • Oversite of public relations, graphic identity, marketing materials.
    • Welcomes visitors by greeting them, in person or on the telephone; answering or directing inquiries. Maintains office needs.
    • Membership File Maintenance
    • Perform other duties as assigned. Working occasional weekends and evenings as needed.

    Skills and Qualifications

    • Excellent Interpersonal skills. Friendly and professional demeanor.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with Past Perfect a plus. Experience with social media platforms.
    • Able to effectively communicate with different stakeholders to including staff members, and members of the community.
    • Excellent Writing Skills; strong scheduling, time management and organizational skills. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
    • Functions well in a position that requires organization, punctuality, and knowledge of best practices.
    • Must be self-motivated and dependable.
    • A non-profit background a strong plus

    Education and Experience:

    • BA/BS preferred; Knowledge of history and/or museums, MA in Museum Studies, Public History or related field a plus.

    Working Conditions:

    Position will be based in a busy historical society environment, subject to frequent interruptions, and will interface regularly with the public. Active summer season at 5 historic sites.

    The work entails dealing professionally with highly confidential information and requires a high degree of confidentiality.

    Physical Requirements:

    Must be able to lift and carry file boxes and other awkward items weighing up to 25 lbs., including up and down stairs. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending throughout the workday.
