Located on historic Rondout Creek, at the terminus of the Delaware & Hudson Canal, the Hudson River Maritime Museum (HRMM) collects and displays four centuries of technological, industrial, and ecological innovations in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Their mission aims to collect, preserve, research, display, and interpret collections of historical artifacts related to the maritime heritage of the Hudson River and its tributaries. The maritime heritage of the Hudson River encompasses many industries including ice harvesting, brick making, boat building, bluestone quarrying, cement making and coal transport. The location of Kingston, halfway between Albany and New York City, allowed the city to flourish during the time when coal was the dominant fuel source in use. Steamboat transportation and commercial fishing expanded simultaneously, and the Rondout Creek thrived as an economic driver and premier tourist attraction for the Mid-Hudson Valley. In recent years, environmental advocacy has increased and with it education on watershed protection. HRMM is excited to further this education to their visitors through their collaboration with MANY and the Water/Ways exhibition.
