The Jupiter Hammon Project: Confronting the Legacy of Enslavement at Preservation Long Island’s Joseph Lloyd Manor

Lauren Brincat, Curator, Preservation Long Island

The Jupiter Hammon Project is a long-term initiative to transform how Preservation Long Island engages local communities with the stories of Jupiter Hammon (1711–before 1806), one of the first published Black American writers, and the generations of people of African descent enslaved in and around Joseph Lloyd Manor, a 1767 plantation house.  While enslaved at the site, Hammon wrote powerfully about the social and moral conflicts of enslavement in the newly formed United States. Lauren will discuss the on-going work of the Jupiter Hammon Project and its mission to develop a new interpretive plan for the historic site guided by the interests and needs of community stakeholders.

Building Capacity with Internal and External Partnerships: Case Studies from the National Park Service

Amy Bracewell, Superintendent, Roosevelt, Vanderbilt, and Van Buren National Historic Sites

With 423 national park units across the country and growing demands, national parks rely on internal and external partnerships to succeed. Parks are increasingly looking to each other for resource sharing, combined efforts for museum storage, and colleague support to help tackle 21st century challenges. Innovation in external partnerships has also opened new opportunities for communities to build stronger bonds with their public lands and interested volunteers to utilize their talents for the benefit of our parks. Amy will share several examples of how internal and external partnerships have helped her site operations.

In this open discussion, Michael Janairo, the manager of communications at the Tang Teaching Museum and a former arts journalist, shares practical insights about how to be heard.
