The Canal Society of New York State is seeking an Executive Director to ensure fulfillment of the Society's mission and strategic plan and to implement administrative procedures for the day-to-day financial and operational oversight of the Society’s properties, staff, collections and programs.

The ED will report directly to the Society’s Board of Directors.  The ED will also work closely with Society committees to prepare budgets, grant proposals, to coordinate and execute the annual appeal and membership drives, as well as promote cooperation with other educational institutions and groups of special regional interest and to assure compliance with all contracts and partnerships.

A major responsibility of the ED is the management of the Society’s nationally-unique interpretive center – the Erie Canal Heritage Park at Port Byron – operated in partnership with the New York State Thruway Authority.  In addition to ensuring that the Park is in readiness to provide positive educational experiences for the visiting public, the ED is responsible for the recruitment, training and scheduling of the Park's paid and volunteer staff and the management of the gift shop. The ED will be expected to provide dynamic leadership that will inspire a team spirit and commitment to the Park's success. The ED will work closely with the Society’s Board to promote clear and effective communication among the Park's stakeholders and audiences.

The successful candidate will have a documented record of creativity, entrepreneurship and accomplishment with history museums and historic sites and a strong appreciation of new and diverse audiences.  Strong organizational skills, knowledge of best practices, professional standards and relevant government regulations, and ability to meet hard deadlines are necessary. A Master's Degree in museum studies with at least five years of successful museum administration or equivalent business experience is preferred. Familiarity with New York State history is favored.

This position requires standing, walking, talking and the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Working weekends and evenings, especially from May through October during the operating season of the Park, will be necessary. Must have a valid driver's license.

To apply, please submit by April 3, 2020 a cover letter, resume and three references to Search Committee, Canal Society of New York State, c/o Craig Williams, Box 844, Trumansburg, NY, 14886.

Founded in 1956 and dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the New York State’s two centuries of canal heritage, the Society has an active membership throughout the United States.  The Erie Canal Heritage Park opened in 2016 and is located on the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90).  The Park’s eighteen-acre property is listed on the National Register and includes a 19th-century Erie Canal lock and the 1894 Erie House.  In 2019 the Park attracted visitors from over sixty countries and every state in the nation.
