    The Canal Society of New York State is seeking a Park Interpreter to staff the Erie Canal Heritage Park at Port Byron, NY. The position is seasonal (May 1 through October 31) and part-time (up to 16 hours / week). Weekend hours will be required. Compensation is $13 / hour. The Park Interpreter will report directly to the Society's Executive Director, or in the Executive Director’s absence, the Park Assistant.

    The Park Interpreter’s primary responsibility is to welcome visitors to the Heritage Park and promote an increasingly diverse audience.  The position will encourage  an appreciation of the Park's historical resources and opportunities to learn more about the Erie Canal.  The Interpreter will also provide brochures and additional information concerning other tourism locations in the region.

    The Interpreter will work with other Park staff to ensure that the Park is prepared on a daily basis to receive visitors and that the Park's facilities are clean and safe. The position will assist with staffing the Park's gift shop including handling sales. The Interpreter may be assigned to various locations across the Park to ensure that all stations are staffed. Additionally, the Interpreter will answer the phone, assist volunteers and be familiar with daily opening and closing procedures. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support Park operations.

    The successful candidate will have experience in effectively working in a team-oriented setting that encourages a positive appearance to visitors to the Park. Knowledge of New York State history and museum practices is favored.

    This position requires standing, walking, talking and the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must have a valid driver's license.

    Founded in 1956 and dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the New York State’s two centuries of canal heritage, the Society has an active membership throughout the United States. The Erie Canal Heritage Park opened in 2016 and is located on the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90). The Park’s eighteen-acre property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes a 19th- century Erie Canal lock and the 1894 Erie House. In 2019 the Park attracted visitors from over sixty countries and every state in the nation.
