Seasonal Historical Interpreter
Great Camp Sagamore, Raquette Lake, NY
Great Camp Sagamore, a National Historic Landmark property, is now hiring historical interpreters for our 2021 season. The interpreter’s primary responsibility is to lead groups of day visitors and overnight guests on guided tours of Sagamore’s 17-acre, 27-building historic campus. Interpreters become full participants in camp life and contribute to providing a safe and welcoming atmosphere. This includes responsibilities of implementing and adhering to strict COVID-19 safety protocols.
Located in New York’s Adirondack Park, Sagamore’s lakeside campus is surrounded by 170-square miles of “forever-wild” State Forest Preserve. Started in 1895 by William West Durant, the complex was sold to Alfred Gwynn Vanderbilt in 1901. For five decades, the Vanderbilt’s hosted some of the most exciting public figures of the time, far from the trappings of modern life. The iconic Main Lodge is one of the most recognized buildings in northern New York and is an archetype of the Adirondack style.
Interpreters will learn Sagamore’s historical origins, its cast of characters and the functions and milieu of camp life through its various phases. Their tours will draw guests into an intricate narrative and do so in ways that are lighthearted and accessible to all.
This is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly position that runs from June 9 through October 11. The standard work schedule is eight hours per day, five days per week. Compensation includes $12.50 per hour, free room and board, and full use of Sagamore’s recreational facilities. Interpreters are expected to participate in 10 hours per week of service tasks, primarily kitchen and housekeeping chores, that help support Sagamore and its educational mission.
Requirements include a four-year college degree, previous experience with public speaking, a demonstrated interest in history, and the ability to thrive in a small, tightknit community deep in a wilderness setting. Qualified people in all stages of their career are encouraged to apply.
