Norwich, NY - For four generations, the I.L. Richer Company was the oldest privately-owned feed business in the Northeast. Learn more about this highly-respected company during “A History of the I.L. Richer Company” as the Chenango County Historical Society’s (CCHS) popular “Third Thursday” seasonal programming continues.

In 1870, Kimball Brothers opened a flour and grist mill in New Berlin. A year later, ambitious young entrepreneur Irving L. Richer purchased the business that would bear his name for 127 years. Join author John C. Mitchell, who led the business from the late 1970s until it was sold in 2008, for an interactive discussion and book signing at 7 p.m. on July 18 in the Loomis Barn on the CCHS campus.

“The story is of a business that grew during a century of rapid change and how the people who worked there adapted to the changing times,” said Mitchell. “I was lucky to be part of the history of I.L. Richer and will be forever thankful to the employees, customers, suppliers and others who made it all possible.”

Throughout its history, the I.L. Richer Company kept pace as industry evolved, becoming a leader in the manufacture and distribution of feeds. “A History of the I.L. Richer Company” explores business operations that occurred during a pivotal time in the American agriculture industry, putting this company at the forefront of many historical developments.

CCHS summer hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call (607) 334-9227 or visit www.Facebook.com/ChenangoHist.
