New York State’s museums and cultural institutions are responding to our changing audiences, the promise of new technology, and the shifting availability of resources. We are creating powerful museums through new partnerships with arts and community organizations, education and environmental institutions, the tourism industry, and local governments. As we strive to define ourselves and the meaning of diversity, we are changing the questions we ask and how we tell stories about our collections. Our need for learning and sharing what we do by coming together as a field is greater than ever. Join us in Rochester to discuss what comes next and help us build a vibrant future!

Genesee Country Village & Museum is New York State’s largest living history museum. Although its season usually does not begin until May, GCV&M is opening on April 7th just for MANY pre-conference workshop attendees. The day will start with a delicious buffet lunch, followed by your choice of workshop. We will conclude with a reception sponsored by the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Part One: CTLE and Me: How to Meet the Needs of Educators
Engaging teachers can be a difficult even without NYSED Continued Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) requirements. This session will provide an overview of the requirements and the application process. Session leaders will offer examples of teacher workshops that meet CTLE requirements and discuss how to improve and attract teachers to your programs.

Collection Storage for Small Museums
This workshop will help museum staff and volunteers understand how to select true archival materials and utilize simple low-tech solutions for a wide range of artifact types. Your Historic Building Preservation Questions Answered!
Join Peter Wisbey, GCV&M’s Curator of Collections, for an insiders’ tour of some of the museum’s recently restored 19th-century buildings. Learn about preservation issues, including historically-appropriate vendors, paint analysis, fire safety procedures, and visitor accessibility.

Natural Dyeing: Harvesting Color from the Foraged and Imported
Learn about gathering plant materials, importing dyestuff, extracting dyes, proper mordanting methods, and dyeing yarn to achieve a wide range of color. Participants should dress in old clothing and bring their enthusiasm because dyeing can be addictive!

19th-Century Brewing
Take this rare opportunity to learn the basic techniques of brewing beer at the Walter Grieve Brewery, a replica of an early 19th-century brewery originally located on Seneca Lake in Geneva, NY. We will showcase the steps in the brewing process up to primary fermentation and learn about the mysteries of brewing. Participants at least 21 years of age can sample the ales. Participants should dress to work.

Beginning Bookbinding
Join GCV&M’s village bookbinder for an introduction to the history of book manufacturing. Learn about bookbinding trends, developments, and techniques from the 18th and 19th centuries. Make your own journal or notebook with a Coptic Stitch binding.

From Diversity to Completion: Interpreting Complex Stories at Historic Sites
Historic sites and museums often need to discuss complex matters of race in historic context with visitors. For many museum professionals, fear of these discussions leads to avoidance of the topic altogether. This open-conversation session will discuss the necessity and complexity of interpreting enslavement, women’s rights, relations/conflict with indigenous people, immigrant communities, and the LGBTQ community in historic sites and museums.

Change: Make or Become; What Will It Be? 
James R. Hackney, Jr., Senior Director of Development, Yale Divinity School
In today’s world, change happens if we cause it or if outside forces push it upon us. How do we learn to embrace and create the change we want to see in our lives together?
Jim became the Senior Director of Development for Yale Divinity School in 2014 where he oversees all fundraising and alumni activities for the School. Prior to returning to his alma mater, he was Managing Partner of Alexander Haas, an Atlanta-based fundraising consulting firm. Jim oversaw the firm’s nation-wide cultural division, including serving as counsel to the Memorial Art Gallery for their Centennial Campaign. In 2012, Jim was named an Arts Envoy by the US State Department and was deployed to Greece to train cultural organizations how to raise private funds.  He has presented for the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), National Park Service, Association of Fund Raising Professionals, Art Museum Development Association, and the Association of Science and Technology Centers. Jim has served on the Board of Directors for AAM and on the Board for the Center for the Future of Museums. He is past president of the Art Museum Development Association and served as a Trustee of the American Craft Council. Prior to joining Alexander Haas in 1995, he was the Director of Development and Marketing for the Mint Museum of Art, where he served as Interim Director for 18 months. A native of Lexington, North Carolina, Jim is an avid collector of studio craft. His career is profiled in Jan Burdick’s 2008 book, Creative Careers in Museums.  He graduated cum laude from Wofford College and earned a M.A.R. from Yale Divinity School.

Several Capstones are only a five-minute walk from the Hyatt Regency; others are in the center of the city, or a short drive in your direction home. The cost for each capstone is included in your conference registration.

An Inside Look at Ganondagan
The Seneca Art & Culture Center at Ganondagan and Friends of Ganondagan

This Capstone will start with an introduction to the Ganondagan State Historic Site, followed by an “insiders” tour of the gallery, and a preview of the upcoming exhibit on “Haudenosaunee Women,” with a focus on the contribution to American suffragists. A panel discussion on the collaboration and consultation process between museums and Native communities and organizations will close with a light snack courtesy of the Iroquois White Corn Project!

Interpreting Suffrage: VoteTilla and GEVA Theater
Susan B Anthony House
Representatives from the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, VoteTilla cast, and key partner organizations will share how VoteTilla changed their perspectives on interpreting history through collaboration and community engagement. Presented in July 2017, VoteTilla featured a diverse cast of three dozen actors, scholars, activists, and costumed interpreters who traveled on five packet boats along the NY Canal System. Using the words of 19th century social reformers, the cast introduced audiences to historical figures including Susan B Anthony, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Matilda Joslyn Gage.

Master Plan Growth: Animals of the Savanna Expansion;
Seneca Park Zoo 

Planning for change at your institution? Join Zoo staff to learn about their Master Plan expansion, representing over $60 million in improvements over the coming years. Learn how it reflects the Zoo’s commitment to conservation, animal welfare, and a high quality guest experience. Take a behind-the scenes hard-hat tour of the Zoo’s four acre expansion of A Step into Africa, which will feature animals of the Savanna, including Masai giraffes, zebra, rhinos and more; expected opening in Summer 2018.

Creating a Successful Museum-School Partnership

This overview of MAG’s highly successful multi-year, museum-school partnership that serves a high-needs, urban elementary school population, will cover setting goals and objectives, building resources, measuring outcomes, and growing programs with best practices. Capstone participants will be engaged as students, spending time in the museum on careful looking, reflecting and sharing what we “notice and wonder,” followed by a hands-on project in the MAG workshop classrooms.

Join Deputy City Historian, Michelle Finn, for a walking tour of Rochester's Downtown Heritage Trail, an urban path that tells the story of the city's past through its buildings and landmarks. The tour is 2.5 miles round trip, outdoors, and will commence rain or shine (barring extreme conditions).

Presenters, including staff of Autism Up and the Center for Disability Rights will offer suggestions on how to best meet the needs of the disability community in your museum including cost effective options and how to implement them in your specific environment.

With two truly unique experiences, discover how RMSC staff and volunteers create and deliver interactive performances that are audience driven. From playing your favorite tune on our 6-foot-tall Tesla coils in Electricity Theater, to having the whole world at your fingertips with our Science on a Sphere, experience firsthand how, and why, we're building flexibility into our facilitated programs. Talk shop about questioning strategies, volunteer training tools, digital learning platforms and finding the right balance between education, entertainment and engagement in relevant experiences for audiences of all ages.

Moving Forward Using the Past
Rochester Museum and Science Center
Hear stories of two different iconic yet problematic displays that were reimagined with a forward vision for inclusive community-building and audience engagement. Learn from activists about the struggle to remove a racist “pickaninny art” panel from a local historic landmark and how the RMSC collaborated with community members to use it as a tool for anti-racist education. Meet with a diverse team of exhibits staff to learn how a 71-year-old diorama was conserved, corrected, updated, and enhanced, including the use of augmented reality.

Including a tour of TV station and interactive experiences at the station, learn how public media can be your partner in community engagement.

Charting a Course for Historic Restoration
Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse

Learn how America’s oldest surviving Lighthouse (1822) and Keeper’s Dwelling (1863) on Lake Ontario were restored into a thriving educational destination and working lighthouse. The project architect and preservation fundraiser will share how they surmounted the significant restoration challenges and their process for securing project funding. Workshop attendees will climb to the top of the Lighthouse Tower and experience the panoramic view.
