COVID-19 Impact on

NYS Museums Report Part 1

In April 2020, the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO) published its findings of a survey on the impact of COVID-19 on museums in Europe. The Museum Association of New York was given permission by NEMO to use their survey questions to generate a comparable dataset for New York Museums in order to convey the impact of this public health crisis on our sector.

Part 2

In July, the American Alliance of Museums released their COVID-19 Impact survey. 16% of museum directors that there is a high risk that their museums could close within 16 months without additional funding.

From July 29 to August 10, we collected information from 198 museums from all ten REDC regions to help us compare New York's numbers. In this report is an update on funding sources to NYS museums, the risk of museum closure in NYS compared to the nation, and an analysis of the Paycheck Protection Program to NYS museums.

AAM's National Survey of COVID-19 Impact on United States Museums

On June 8, 2020, the American Alliance of Museums launched a survey designed to capture a snapshot of the state of US museums during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. By the time the survey closed on June 30, directors of 760 museums of all types and sizes had reported on their plans for reopening, the projected financial impact of the pandemic, and the services they were proving to their communities.

Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO)

NEMO has gathered information about museum reopenings and closures from 31 European countries. The overview lists details about reopenings, political and sector communication as well as hygiene measures. The overview is accompanied by a NEMO statement calling for museums to reopen and get support to stay open.
